We want to allow users to edit the "type" field for the zero level model component. (follows on from ticket #596 )

This requires a controlled vocabulary for the different types of models (this ticket)
and a method to implement the controlled vacabulary in the questionnaire #662 .

I think we agreed that the controlled vocab would go along the lines of

  • Earth system
  • Coupled Atmosphere-Ocean
  • Atmosphere Only

Are there any more for CMIP5?

Bryan did suggest AMIP but I don't think we should use this because amip is a type of intercomparison experiment not a type of model.

Hi Charlotte,

I don't think either there is more than these 3 "Top-model classes" for CMIP5 (we still have to produce definitions for them - object of a next comment).

OK for using "Atmosphere Only" instead of "AMIP" (I think your argument is right)

One more thinking: Don't you think that the selection of one of these top-model class should (idealy) imply different structure in the model component tree? For instance, a user filling the qn may be somewhat puzzled if describing an "Atmosphere Only" model and being asked for description of its Ocean, Aersols, etc... components (this remark is more for ticket#662).

I know this (or something similar on the degree of "coherence control" by the qn) has already been disscussed on the Y2 meeting by Eric/Bryan?... But just to make sure that this is technically impossible (or too much painful) to implement.

According to yesterday's telco, previous comment about coherence between modelClass (Earth System / Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere / Atmosphere Only) and the components appearing in the components tree of the Qnaire model main page is turned into a request for a simple "information note" and posted to ticket #662.

Back on the 3-terms list...

After discussion with Sophie, it seems to us that "Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere" category can generate confusion in user's mind, i.e. what is the where is the frontier between "Earth System" and "Coupled O-A"?

E.g.: Is an atmospheric model coupled to an ocean one including sea ice, an Earth System or a Coupled O-A? Same question if we have an atmospheric model including the land component...

So the suggestion here is to remove this intermediate "Coupled O-A" category...

What do others think?

Maybe I started by the bottom end...

Before suggesting modifications of the list for top-model classes, we should write definitions for each term...

Scutinizing the "CMIP5 Experiment Design" document, I realized that there was a clear definition for ESMs (p23):

Earth System Models: coupled carbon/climate models

So the alternate proposition for the list:

  • Earth System
  • Climate
  • Atmosphere Only

As there's a concensus (between Charlotte and I... I recognize this is a light concensus :-), but anyway we have to go ahead), I reasign this ticket to Bryan for implementation in the Qnaire.
